Opposition to elect new leader

The opposition Social Democratic Party will tomorrow elect a new leader. Former Porto Mayor Rui Rio will be up against Pedro Santana Lopes, who spent a brief period in charge as Prime Minister in 2005.

The winning candidate will replace Pedro Passos Coelho, who announced he will be standing down as party leader late last year.

The new leader will be elected by 73,000 card-carrying members as the PSD aims to regain ground lost to the ruling Socialist Party.
