Fines for dropping cigarette butts

Parliament is tomorrow set to approve new legislation fining people who leave cigarette butts on the street.
Some criticism has been levelled at the extent of the fines, which are proposed to start at 500 euros for individuals and reach 9,000 euros for companies who fail to adequately set up areas for workers to extinguish their cigarettes.
According to estimates, around 7,000 cigarette butts are left on streets and sidewalks every minute in Portugal.
