Most critical fire period ends with 65,000 hectares burned

The most critical period of forest fires in Portugal ended on Wednesday with about 65,000 hectares of burnt area and the death of five firefighters and the pilot of a firefighting plane.

Compared with 2019, there were 1,379 fewer occurrences of rural fires this year, but the burnt area increased by about 58%.

Fire combat resources will be reduced today and will once again be cut in the second half of October.
