Portugal is among oldest countries in the world
The Portuguese population is the third oldest in Europe and fifth oldest in the world. This is the result of the birth rate falling to almost one child per couple, after standing at more than two back in 1982.
The situation is made more complicated with longevity increasing at a rapid rate in Portugal.
Further estimates are that by 2050, more than half of the country’s population will be either children or pensioners, placing a severe strain on the social security system and the nation’s workforce.
