Portugal is the Mediterranean country with the largest area of burnt land, according to Jornal Económico.
Together, Portugal, Spain, France, Turkey, Greece and Italy comprise more than 80 percent of all land that burns on the European continent annually.
Fighting fires in the Mediterranean costs two billion euros every year, according to a new WWF report, which states 96 percent of fires are started intentionally.
The report also highlights a new type of “extreme, uncontrollable and lethal mega-fire”, seen “for the first time in Portugal in June 2017”.
