Racism, torture charges dropped in trial of police for alleged assault
Public prosecutors on Tuesday dropped racism and torture charges in the trial of 17 police officers. The charges relate to incidents in 2015 in the Cova da Moura neighbourhood near Lisbon. But in their closing statements, the prosecution took the view that the 17 officers were not motivated by “racial hatred” in their actions. The 17 defendants – all men – continue to face charges of slander, insult, bodily harm and perjury.
