Record the cicada song and help scientists find them

Scientists challenge people to record the cicada song and record the coordinates of their location, so that they can update the map of the geographic distribution of the 13 species that live in Portugal.

The challenge, that runs until September 30, was launched by a team of researchers from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, is named “Cicadas of Portugal – The singing insects” and is part of a broader initiative, the creation, of the first “Red List of Invertebrates” in the country.

According to the latest cicada census, made by scientists in 2004, there are 13 species in Portugal that cluster in small nucleo in the North, Center, Alentejo and Algarve regions.
