Red Tide induces shellfish bans

The Portuguese Met Office has banned the catching and selling of shellfish caught on the stretch of Algarve coast between Olhão and Faro due to the red tide algae currently affecting the sea.

A shellfish ban is also in place between Lagos and Albufeira due to high levels of lipophilic toxins caused by the Algae. A number of beaches were closed over the weekend when the algae appeared, turning the water red.
