Red tide shuts Algarve beaches
A red tide caused by algae has resulted in the closure of beaches between Faro and Vilamoura.
Officials said last night they are conducting tests to confirm the strain of the bloom. In some cases, the algae causes toxins that kill fish and make shellfish dangerous to eat.
The toxins may also make the surrounding air difficult to breathe while turning the water red. Concerns have also been raised that the algae could spread to neighbouring councils in the coming days, forcing additional beach closures.
